Sjoberg said she reported the incident to the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.
Lt. Joe Boyle of the GHDPS said door-to-door solicitors are required to carry permits and are restricted to soliciting from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We would urge residents to call the police or City Hall if they suspect someone is trying to scam money from them,” he said. “They also could be casing the neighborhood.”
Boyle said residents also should check with the Better Business Bureau before making any purchases or giving donations to door-to-door solicitors.
“You hate to say that every solicitor is trying to scam residents, but you do have to be careful,” he said.
