GHT Board to vote on bike path snow removal purchase in 2 weeks

Earlier this year, the township conducted an “anectodal” survey on its website, and published information on the issue in its spring newsletter, asking for feedback from residents. The survey elicited 128 responses, with 90 responses — or 70 percent — supporting bike path snow removal; and 38 responses — or about 30 percent — opposing it, according to Township Manager Bill Cargo.

Township staff recommended the purchase of a Turbo Toolcat, in addition to other equipment — some of which will replace the sweepers currently used on the paths — costing about $87,000. This will take up less than 6 percent of the township general fund’s reserves, Cargo said.

Board members discussed whether all miles of the bike path would need to be plowed — or, to save money, just plow certain paths.

“That’s a policy decision,” Cargo said. “The capital cost is going to be the same whether you do all 22 miles or 2 miles. The board may decide to do all 22 miles, but prioritize certain areas.”

The Township Board is expected to vote on the snow plow equipment purchase at its next meeting. If approved, the program could be put in place in time for the upcoming winter season.
