Cosmetology students raising Susan G. Komen funds today

Today’s Susan G. Komen Rally for a Cure fundraiser runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the cosmetology school, 111 W. Exchange St. Events include children’s games, raffles, refreshments; and discounted haircuts, manicures and other salon services.

Students will be passing out publicity fliers on Savidge Street at the intersections of Lake and Jackson streets.

“We’ll be handing out stickers and breast cancer awareness bracelets,” said Cook, who left insurance sales to pursue her childhood dream of cosmetology. “We’ll have pom-pons, but we won’t be acting all crazy and chasing down cars or anything.”

School officials notified the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department of their plans earlier this month.

Cook said she put pink coloring in her hair in commemoration of the Susan G. Komen event.

“Cancer has touched some of our families,” Cook said. “And knowing this money will go to research and helping to find a cure, we’re trying to make as much money as we can. The more money we can give to that kind of foundation, the more lives we can save.”
