“It’s kind of a welcome to Grand Haven,” she said. “Everybody seems to love it.”

The Pere Marquette 1223 train was one of the last of the 1200’s to operate after steam locomotives were converted to diesel in the late 1940s, according to the Tri-Cities Museum website. Decades after its final run in 1951, Grand Haven was chosen among six bids to be its final resting stop.

The annual summer train tour and ice cream social has occurred for several years, and this year, the event also included music and face painting. Children also received balloon animals and cardboard conductor hats to wear.

Kelly Larson of Sweet Temptations anticipated they would serve between 400 and 500 cups of ice cream by the end of the two-hour gathering.
