The shop is truly a family business. Helping out at the small-engine repair sales and service shop is Sam’s wife, Jan — and their three children: Kaylyn, 17, a senior at Zeeland West High; Sam Jr., 16, a junior at Zeeland West; and Seth, 12, who be a sixth-grader this fall at Creekside Middle School.

“We really moved the business to Grand Haven because it’s closer to the beach for Kaylyn,” VanderPloeg joked.

The truth is that Husqvarna was looking to place a dealership in Grand Haven to service and sell the company’s line of snow throwers, trimmers, tractors, lawnmowers and chainsaws, VanderPloeg said.

“We also talked to people who thought they needed another small-engine repair shop in Grand Haven,” he added.
