‘Need is great’ at local food pantries

“I feel dismayed to see so many empty shelves.” O’Neill said.

Love INC’s central food pantry at 1106 Fulton St. in Grand Haven is in need of canned tuna fish, beef stew, beans, chunky soups, canned peas, canned potatoes and canned tomatoes.

“We need food with high protein,” O’Neill said. “I’ve never seen it when we didn’t have a can of beans on the shelf.”

The number of people in need of food assistance has risen dramatically, according to O’Neill. “Last year, we served almost 3,600 families, or 300 a month,” she said.
