Circus excites crowds on Harbor Island

“It’s a great fundraiser for the Tri-Cities Kiwanis,” said David Garland, the club’s president-elect who was helping with parking duties. “But again, it’s a fun, family event that we want to make sure that everybody can participate in and have a good time.”

Curry said it was the first time her daughters — Iridessa, 3, and Hailee, 2 — had seen a circus. Curry said she had been to the circus when she was little, but doesn’t really remember it.

“I can’t wait to see the trapeze,” she said.

Garland said Lilly the elephant pulled up the circus “big top” on Saturday morning.

“She’s 36 years old,” Garland said, “and happy to be eating grass instead of cement (like) on some of the other venues they travel around.”

The circus had two shows — at 2 and 5:30 p.m.

Garland said about 15 of the club’s 40 members volunteered to help run the event. He said they’re always recruiting new members, and they meet for lunch every Wednesday at the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Grand Haven.
