The record of 1,138 free meals served on Saturday eclipsed the previous record of 874 a couple of years ago, Bergman said. Exactly 800 were served at last year’s city picnic.
Bergman attributed the large crowd to beautiful summer weather and that the word must be getting out about the community picnic.
“We do this as kind of a celebration,” the mayor explained. “It’s the end of summer for people. We’ve had a lot of visitors, a lot of friends and relatives that have come to Grand Haven this summer, and this is just a kind of celebration — we got our city back, and it’s time to just enjoy your neighbors and friends here at the picnic.
