Street fair brings community together

Grand Haven resident Lesley Densmore appreciated the gift. So did her grandson, Jacob Lawhorn, 7, of Livonia.

“This is a great event,” Densmore said. “I read about it in the newspaper and thought we would come over and see what it was all about.”

Jacob said he most enjoyed watching Colorado magician David Laflin, who performed two shows during the street party.

“I have a magic book and a magic hat at home,” Jacob said as he sipped at a sno-cone.

Ferrysburg resident Adriana Frierson got a close-up look at the magic. She joined Laflin on stage to help with a levitation trick as a small round table appeared to float in front of her.

“It was cool,” the Lake Hills Elementary third-grader said after the show. “I don’t know how it worked. I just thought it was magic.”

Bytwerk said the volunteerism that brought the $8,000 street party to life also had a sense of magic. But no one disappeared — church members were present — serving food, tending children’s games, working the art tent and spinning cotton candy.

“We’ve had guys here setting up and cooking the pig all night long,” Bytwerk said. “People have donated time, money and prizes. We’re always amazed with the support we get.”
