Westra sculpture comes alive along GH waterfront

During ArtPrize 2009 in Grand Rapids, Westra placed in the top 10 with his kinetic wind sculpture called “Winddancer 2.” This design featured similar elements to the sculpture on Grand Haven’s waterfront, but was smaller in size.

“The first few months that it was up, I went down there a lot,” Westra said.

Westra said he went to check on the sculpture to make sure it was holding up during the winds of the fall and winter months. Since then, he said he continues to visit the sculpture to people-watch and get their reaction of the sculpture.

“I see a lot of people taking photos of it,” he said.

Westra said it took him awhile to fabricate the metal sculpture. He had assistance from others — ranging from volunteers from Challenge Machine, who helped create schematics; to people at Great Lakes Contracting, who helped the fabrication process.

“It took many, many hours at Great Lakes Contracting to turn it into a sculpture,” Westra said.

Westra said he was hopeful events like ArtWalk would provide additional positive events for the Grand Haven community, in addition to the annual Coast Guard Festival.

“Hopefully, it can be another thing Grand Haven can be associated with,” he said of ArtWalk.
