Youth art 'amazing' in 2nd annual ArtWalk competition

“The work by students was really amazing,” said Kollewehr, executive director of the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority and a co-organizer of Grand Haven ArtWalk. “We are impressed by the level of ability and interest in art at very young ages.”

Last year’s youth art contest attracted a total of 49 entries. This year’s competition had a total of 28.

“The number of entries took a slight dip, but I anticipate the number to increase next year as awareness of the exhibit continues to increase,” Kollewehr said. “We collected many names of young artists who would like to participate next year.”

Here are the winners of the ArtWalk Youth Competition, and the titles of their works:

Ages 14-17

Ages 8 and under

Sculpture: Josephine Morse of Spring Lake, “Calico Cat & Her Kittens”

Drawing/Mixed Media: Grace Reiger of Grand Haven, “A Hoot of a Time”

Painting: Carter Wisniewski of Grand Haven, “Let’s Rock N Roll People”

Winners will receive Chamber of Commerce “Dune Dollars” — certificates that can be used at dozens of shops and restaurants in the Grand Haven area. Prizes can be picked up at ArtWalk headquarters, 20 N. Fifth St., beginning at noon today.

Voting for ArtWalk 2011 concludes at noon Wednesday. The public announcement of the prize winners will be made between 5 and 6 p.m. Wednesday at the event’s headquarters. An invitation-only closing reception will follow at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.
