“The purpose of this is to help educate our customers on recycling, and to help give them a way to get rid of those old window air conditioners and dehumidifiers that were maybe in their basement or garage, and they didn’t know what to do with them,” Kratt explained.

Employees of Padnos Iron & Metal and the BLP checked out the appliances and drained any freon gas from the units before loading them into a dumpster in the parking lot off Franklin Avenue.

“We’re collecting running appliances that’s going to decrease the strain on the electrical grid,” explained Travis Mikulenas, an account executive for Padnos Iron & Metal. “And we’re here ... to recycle the metals that are being collected as part of the program.”

After the event, the Padnos staff took the dumpster back to their Holland facility, where the units were to be compressed and sent to steel mills for creating new products.
