Firefighters converge on SLT for training with safety jacks

Training officer John Stalzer said about 35 firefighters from five fire departments in Ottawa and Muskegon counties were participating in the training, which involved a piece of equipment called a safety jack.

“Each fire department has one of these systems, or is getting one,” Stalzer said. “They are designed to stabilize and lift the vehicles in case of emergency. ... We’re getting together today to use these units to practice and also to see what other equipment each other has. If we have a large emergency, we can work together.”

One scenario was a utility pole had fallen on a vehicle on its side, Stalzer said. Firefighters were working with the assumption that there was a person trapped under the vehicle.

Fire departments participating in the training Saturday morning included Spring Lake Township, Crockery Township, Ferrysburg, Norton Shores and Muskegon Township.
