A suspect he was booking once called Trevor Slot a nice officer, mourners remembered during a service at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.

Police officers from the across the state joined local law enforcement and Slot’s family at the services.

“Trevor ..., I was truly blessed to know you,” Walker Police officer Brandyn Heugel said during the services. “I vow to honor you and the sacrifice you made for the rest of my life.”

Slot, 41, of Grand Rapids was killed Oct. 13 while laying down spike strips to stop a speeding sport utility vehicle on Interstate 96 in Ottawa County.

Derryl LaFave Jr. and Kristopher Cheyne crashed after Slot was hit. They were shot and killed by police when they fired at officers. The men fled after robbing a Muskegon County bank, police said.

Slot is survived by his wife, Kim; and daughters, Katelyn and Abigail.

Flags across the state were ordered lowered Friday by Gov. Rick Snyder.
