Day of the Dead to be celebrated in Holland

Anonymous • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:11 AM

This joyful holiday honors the memories of loved ones who have died.

The holiday has an intricate history, intertwined with the history of Mexico and Latin American culture. The Holland Area Arts Council will celebrate through various traditions — including music, dance, crafts, food, and a costume procession and celebration in the evening.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the arts council, 150 E. Eighth St. in Holland, and participants will walk in a costumed musical procession to the Holland Armory, 16 W. Ninth St. There will be the music, dance performances, a “Frida & Catrina” costume contest, crafts, booths and an ofrenda (Day of the Dead offering). Food and punch will be available by Margaritas.

The event will feature performances by El Son De Mexico; a local mariachi band, music and dance by Isaias Quinametzin Leal; a play by Roli Mancera; and a dance performance by Raymundo Trujillo.

Everyone is invited and the event is free.
