GH man makes unique snowmen for bazaar

The craft show and sale is taking place at the church, 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. All proceeds from the bazaar will benefit local and national charities.

Buckley, a member of the church, made each snowman out of cherry wood. None are alike due to the decorations applied to the finished product by the church’s women’s group.

The process the Grand Haven man used to make these carvings was to hand-cut the wood, level off the bases, let the wood dry for a week’s time, collect sticks to use as arms for each snowman and drill holes in the wood to place the stick arms.

From there, the women’s group went to work and gave each of the wooden snowmen a special personality.

The women created hand-sewn or hand-knitted scarves for each figurine. Some crafted netting to make a ballerina outfit, some are made with candy canes, some have sequins and lots of surface design. One figure has a blue hat with a bluebird in hand. Another is made to resemble a “grandfather snowman” with a blue jean shirt and tie in denim. One has ice skates with it.
