Nationwide Emergency Alert System test set for Wednesday

Len Painter • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:13 AM

The test will last about 30 seconds.

Locally, the test will be overseen by the Ottawa County Emergency Management team, under the direction of Director Beth Thomas.

“We will be monitoring the test very closely in conjunction with federal emergency officials,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the county and state regularly send out weather alerts and conduct tests of the emergency system, but this is the first time it has been conducted on a national scale.

“This is an emergency system that the president can use to address the nation,” Thomas said.

Those with a NOAA weather radio should also be aware that, because of this test, the National Weather Service is rescheduling its weekly test for Tuesday instead of Wednesday, according to Thomas. However, NOAA will not transmit the EAS test on Wednesday.
