Veterans fill many ranks at Grand Haven post office

That’s what prompted her to collect pictures of postal employees who are veterans and make a display in the Grand Haven post office’s breakroom for Veterans Day a few years ago.

The employees eventually convinced her to put the display in the lobby for the public to see as well.

Kiehborth, a U.S. Navy veteran, said she planned to tell her employees today that the display is back in the lobby.

“It’s pretty interesting to see what some of these people looked like 30 years ago,” she said.

Eleven Grand Haven postal employees — from maintenance to clerks and carriers to the postmaster — are veterans of the Navy, Army, National Guard and Marines.

“We’re a small office and that’s a lot of veterans,” said carrier Doug Cody, the lone Marine in the group — and proud of it.

Veterans Day is Friday.

The Grand Haven postal employees and their areas of service are: Barb Kiehborth, postmaster, Navy, 1976-80; Doug Cody, city carrier, Marines, 1986-94; Jay Sualeone, city carrier, Army, 1983-87; Tom Kolenda, rural carrier, National Guard, 1986-92; Pat Rewa, rural carrier, Navy, 1971-77; Rick Ream, maintenance, Army, 1971-73; Vicki Flynn, clerk, Army, 1974-77; Linda Richards, clerk, Navy, 1988-90; Rich Korstange, clerk, Army, 1982-97; Vita Trygstad, supervisor, Army, 1981-83; and Pete Bol, rural carrier, Navy, 1957-59.
