Expansion nearly complete at GHT administrative complex

Expansion to the Sheriff’s Department’s office — as well as storage expansion — inside the township’s administration complex on 168th Avenue began in August and wrapped up earlier this month.

The expansion more than tripled the amount of space used by the deputies by adding an additional 630-square-feet of unused township office space to the 320-square-foot Sheriff’s Department office, located on the southern end of the complex. The additional space gives the officers three rooms — one for evidence and processing, one for office space, and another to be used for interviewing — rather than its previously one small room.

Since moving in the new space a week ago, the deputies noted the extra space at the township complex has already been useful.

“It’s a great place for a meeting room,” Sgt. Valerie Weiss said Thursday. “Otherwise, we would have to be in the hallway or at headquarters.”

The space will be used by the four deputies and four of the department’s district car patrols, in addition to other officers if they are working on a case in the area, according to Weiss. They do not have access to the main township offices or the storage rooms where records are kept.

“We appreciate that Grand Haven Township gave us this space,” Weiss said. “It will be a benefit to the township residents, so we can serve them better.”
