Alyssia Crook of Hudsonville will be on the Everyday Heroes float during Saturday’s Santa Parade. Alyssia will be joined on the float by her older brother, Carson, who’s on leave from military training and soon will be deployed to Afghanistan.
Alyssia was born with defects in her legs that affect the nerves, veins, cartilage and muscles. After she was adopted by Chad and Karen Crook, she underwent dozens of surgeries to relieve pain and improve circulation.
Surgeons eventually gave her parents the option of either shortening both legs or undergoing amputation of the left leg, which was more severely affected. Alyssia chose amputation.
