Downtown store sends Nativity scene home

 The 11 figures in the nine-piece display made their way back home to the museum after spending approximately 50 years gracing the windows of Fortino’s, just a few doors down from the museum.

Radtke said the display is back “home” because it was originally used by both the Addison Baltz and Steketee’s department stores from the 1940s to the early 1970s — in the same Akeley Building the museum now occupies.

Margaret Fortino-Michlitsch said she always admired the display as a child; and a longtime family friend, Merle Benedict, knew that. Fortino-Michlitsch said that’s why he gave the figures to her when they were no longer needed for Steketee’s.
