Boy Scouts help keep trails safe

Assistant Scoutmaster Mark Walling said the group had a sleepover at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes, then took a couple of hours out of their morning on Nov. 19 to walk the trails to make sure they were safe and ready for cross-country skiers.

“We try and catch it right before Thanksgiving, before the snow flies,” Walling said. “We keep a watch out for what is dangerous and move the trees off the trail.”

Bob Mesereau, a former assistant scoutmaster who lives in the area, said he walks the trails first to see where the group’s efforts are needed.

“That way, we can take them right to the problem areas,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for four or five years now.”

Boy Scouts Troop 246 is based at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven.
