The choirs and Love INC are teaming up to present benefit concerts at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at the school’s Performing Arts Center, 17001 Ferris St. More than 200 students are expected to participate in the concerts.
While raising money will be the primary goal, the concerts will also feature the debut of a special song written by composer Rollo Dilworth — “Oh, What a Beautiful City.”
Dilworth, an associate professor of choral music education at Temple University in Philadelphia, will be attending the concerts to conduct the song.
It was a meeting with the GHHS choirs and Director Shirley Lemon that inspired him to write the song. Dilworth was finishing a residency two years ago with the Holland Chorale and one of his assignments was to meet with a high school’s choirs.
“I was blown away by the quality of their program,” he recalled.
Dilworth said “Oh What a Beautiful City” is a modern gospel song that will appeal to younger people.
“I am very excited about being in Grand Haven,” said Dilworth, who also serves as conductor of Temple’s University Chorale.
Tickets for the concerts are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for children; and are available at the high school office, The Bookman and the following Love INC locations: 1106 Fulton Ave. in Grand Haven, 200 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake and 13151 Cleveland St. in Nunica. They will also be available at the door.
