The cross that has topped the church at 760 E. Savidge St. since 1957 was removed Wednesday morning and will be replaced by a new structure in about two weeks, according to the Rev. Dan Anderson.

The 2-by-4-foot aluminum cross was struck by lighting on May 25.

Grand Rapids-based Buist Sheet Metal Co. is fabricating a new cross of similar size, and it will include a lightning rod to help prevent future damage.

“It’s more meaningful than it is large,” Anderson said of the cross. “It’s strange to look up and simply see a piece of steel sticking up in the air. Isn’t it amazing how one piece of architecture changes the whole look of a steeple?”

The lightning strike caused between $15,000 and $20,000 in damages, according to Anderson. Much of it was undiscovered for days and weeks.

Spring Lake Presbyterian’s insurance carrier has agreed to pay for the new cross, which is expected to cost about $11,000, according to Anderson.
