School board seeks emergency manager

The school board on Wednesday requested such a move in the face of an estimated $10 million deficit.
The board voted to ask that Marios Demetriou, the deputy superintendent for the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District, be appointed emergency manager. It also eliminated the position of the district’s superintendent.
An e-mail seeking information on how the request might be handled was sent today by The Associated Press to officials with the state departments of Education and Treasury.
Joy Robinson, president of the Muskegon Heights teachers union, said the school board “has failed” the district by asking for an emergency manager.
