“She was very excited because she was going to have to cancel her layaway because she couldn’t afford them,” said Paula Gue, store manager of the Walmart store, 14700 U.S. 31 in Grand Haven Township. “That was really nice. ... It’s a way for them to have a better Christmas.”

Gue said this is the first time an anonymous “Santa” has paid for a local employee’s Christmas gifts.

The spirit of giving has been prospering in stores throughout the country this Christmas season, with “Secret Santas” paying off strangers’ layaway items. The Tri-Cities area has been no exception.

Gue said the phenomena occurred twice at the local Walmart store last week — choosing customers who had toys and gifts for children in their layaway rather than electronic goods.

“It’s nice that customers want to pay off someone’s layaway,” she said this morning.

The associate and the customer whose “few hundred dollars” of layaway items that were paid off want to thank the person for being so generous, Gue said. The

“Secret Santa,” however, wishes to remain anonymous.

“They just wanted to do it to keep with the holiday spirit,” Gue said.
