Grand Haven Transportation Director Tom Manderscheid said that he was “very excited” to be bringing the bus service to the township.
“I think we’ll be in real good shape,” he said. “It’s going to be really nice challenge and I think we’re up to it.”
Grand Haven Township voters on May 3 approved a 0.95-mill transportation tax, which includes 0.45 mill for the Harbor Transit service, to bring the local bus service to the township. The millage will allow Harbor Transit to reach the communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake Village, Ferrysburg and Grand Haven Township.
Currently, Harbor Transit serves Grand Haven, Ferrysburg and Spring Lake Village. It has separate contracts for Meijer and Timberview Apartments in the township.
Harbor Transit has also added more bodies to its staff as a result of the township expansion. Manderscheid said this includes six new drivers with the possibility of adding three more in 2012. A customer service/marketing employee was also added.
