Grand Rapids ranks No. 10 on ‘Gayest Cities’ list

WZZM-TV • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:19 AM

The magazine based the list on nine criteria: the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) elected city officials; whether the city has a WNBA team; whether the city sent a competitor to the International Mr. Leather competition; whether it has a chapter of the Imperial Court, an LGBT group; the number of teams that competed in the Gay Softball World Series; the number of LGBT bookstores; whether the city has a nude yoga class; whether the city has protections prohibiting discrimination against people who are transgender; and concerts by the music groups Gossip, the Cliks and the Veronicas.

The magazine applied the criteria based on what editors called “per capita queerness.”

Grand Rapids placed 10th because of its LGBT bookstores, transgender protections and trendy concerts. The Advocate also cited available activities at Grand Rapids bars and nightclubs.

“I’m not surprised,” said Rick Norton, a Grand Rapids man married to his male partner for 23 years. “I believe Grand Rapids has grown up immensely.”
