The advisory area also includes Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson counties.

The National Weather Service said 3-5 inches of snow will fall this afternoon and evening. The highest amounts will likely fall along the Interstate 94 corridor from South Haven to Jackson. Around 6 inches could occur in some areas.

Steady snow will spread from west to east, beginning around 3 p.m. at the Lakeshore and reaching Lansing around 5 p.m. The weather bureau forecasts accumulation rates of one-half inch per hour between 4 and 9 p.m.

Snow-covered roads and reduced visibilities will likely slow travel this afternoon and evening. The Michigan Department of Transportation reminds motorists to adjust speeds based on the conditions, and to take it slow on ice and snow.

Accumulating snow will taper to flurries at most locations before midnight.
