“There were around 100 people who showed up and we had around 70 items,” said the 22-year-old graduate of Grand Haven High School and senior at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Francart is taking part in The World Race, a program that launched in 2006 doing mission work in Mexico. Francart’s route overseas includes stops in India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Latvia and Estonia/Lithuania.
According to Francart, she is one of 72 people who make up the group heading on her leg of the race. Those 72 people are then split up into teams of 12 that work on different projects.
The silent auction at Ferrysburg Community Church was aimed at helping Francart raise the $15,500 needed to cover all of her expenses on the trip.
“We raised $2,324 from the auction alone,” she said.
Alongside the silent auction, a bake sale brought in an additional $167 for Francart’s trip.
“A lady from the church baked a ton of goodies and surprised us,” Francart said.
During the nearly yearlong mission, Francart will be detailing her experiences in an online blog, and she already has entries about preparing for the trip. More information about Francart’s journey can be found at http://samfrancart.theworldrace.org/.
