Auctioneers ask for sign law change

Planners are discussing whether yard signs should be allowed on private property that advertise a business that doesn’t relate to the existing business or products for sale at that site.

The issue about whether the signs should be regulated was brought to the attention of city officials on Dec. 16 by local online auction company owners Murray Swiftney and Hope Tripp of Grand Haven-based Right Choice Auctions.

“We were trying to get them to allow us to put up directional signs,” Tripp said.

Swiftney said he and Tripp are trying to go about making the change because they don’t want to do anything against the city’s rules.
