City Council OKs rec grant application

City Council on Monday night approved an application for a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant for a $179,788 project with a 30-percent city match. If approved, work would likely begin on the park improvements in fall 2014.

The proposed project would include a 2,500-square-foot plaza near the skate park, new NCAA-style basketball courts, new sidewalks and an enhanced parking/traffic loop near the Mulligan’s Hollow ski lodge.

Mayor Geri McCaleb said she was enthusiastic about the changes, but wanted to make sure there was fencing around the basketball courts for safety.

“Balls roll away and kids chase them,” she said.

According to the assistant to the city manager, Sam Janson, the reduced project cost came in part because of a desire to find adequate funding for the city’s 30-percent match.
