State law proposed to honor Coopersville crash victims

Bruce Privacky, 16, and his sister Toni, 13, died when their car slammed into the back of a school bus in December 2011.

State Rep. Holly Hughes is introducing a bill that would require flashing lights on the back of buses. The lights would be eye level so that drivers have a better visual cue to slow down.

"It makes sense to have the intermittent lights at eye level," said Hughes, R-Montague. "You're eyes aren't always up."

The state transportation director, area universities and a dozen other agencies helped research the solution. The bill is expected to be heard by the state House Transportation Committee today and then will be passed on to the full House for the rest of lawmakers to hear.

Investigators found the Privacky children were not texting or on the phone.
