Sign of the times

The historic Chevrolet sign at Gage Motor Mall was taken down on Tuesday, after more than 40 years in service, for restoration and repair.

Postema Signs & Graphics of Grand Rapids will be refurbishing the porcelain and neon structure in their shop, a process that should take about one month.

Jim VanTol of Postema Signs & Graphics said the sign is one of two in existence, and measures 10 feet high and 34 feet wide. Including its pole, the structure stands nearly 50 feet off the ground.

Gage Motor Mall received a nonconforming landmark sign designation for the sign by the Grand Haven Planning Department in order to keep the sign earlier this month.

VanTol said VanHouten Neon Signs built the sign and installed it in Grand Haven in 1965, swapping a 1966 Chevy Caprice for payment. The porcelain for the sign was done at Challenge Porcelain in Grand Haven.
