Village to build path's missing link

The 8-foot-wide path will be built on a Michigan Department of Transportation easement, with the state agency's permission. The extension will connect the existing path as it emerges from under the M-104 bridge to the Tri-Cities Connector Path on the south side of Savidge Street.

The paved path will provide a continuous run to the newly constructed Grand River Greenway, just east of Village Cove Marina.

Holiday Inn and village officials have been in negotiations for completion of the path for several years.

Hotel management was concerned about bikers cutting through the parking lot during the busy summer season and boaters grew weary of bikers on the boardwalk in front of their boat slips. Several years ago, a biker fell into the Grand River trying to avoid picnic tables that boaters had placed in the middle of the boardwalk, according to a village staff member.

“There have been conflicts with bikers and walkers and folks in the marina in terms of right of way,” said Village President Jim MacLachlan. “The key to making this thing work is MDOT giving us an easement.”
