The Holland Sentinel reported Friday that Holland saved $150,000 while the Ottawa County Road Commission saved more than $1 million.

Holland Finance Director Tim Vagle said the city's primary savings came with using less salt and paying less in overtime.

The city budgeted more than $706,000, but spent about $389,000 on snow and ice control. Funds also were spent on drain, ditch and other projects typically taken care of during warmer months.

Ottawa County budgeted $2.6 million to keep roads ice and snow free. Only $1.5 million was spent. Some of the county's savings will go toward culvert replacements and other road improvement projects.
