Police said Robert Fore, 71, was driving his 2005 Hyundai Tucson west on I-96, exited onto westbound M-104, then tried to do a U-turn at the bottom of the ramp.

His vehicle was hit by a westbound semi, driven by Timothy Telgenhof, 56, of Holland.

Telgenhof was not able to avoid the vehicle turning in front of him and struck the front driver’s side of the Hyundai, said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer said the SUV had heavy front end damage and firefighters had to use a tool to pop open the door.

Fore was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Muskegon, then was transferred to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. A hospital spokesperson said he was listed in fair condition today.

Police said both drivers were wearing seatbelts and that Telgenhof was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
