Red Cross canteen helps emergency personnel

The executive director of the Ottawa County Chapter of the American Red Cross said that wasn’t happening when he arrived on the scene from Chicago in 2010.

Mitchell started going to the fire chiefs meetings to find out what the Red Cross could do to help, and they started to call.

In turn, he said, Red Cross volunteers are placed at the scene of a disaster ready to help the victims that much quicker.

“We’re now over 100 percent increase in services provided to fire victims,” Mitchell said.

The past two years, volunteers have been responding to fires and other incidents using an old mini van, Mitchell said.

The van is now being used in Berrien County, and Ottawa County volunteers have upgraded their equipment.

Earlier this spring, Allendale Township donated their 15-year-old fire rescue vehicle to the cause. An anonymous resident then donated funds to have the truck equipped with a restroom.

“We wanted to provide facilities for first responders when necessary,” Mitchell said.
