Park volunteers needed for Work Days

This is an opportunity for adults, families and groups to help improve the county parks. Ages 12-16 are welcome with adult supervision. Tools, water and snacks are provided. Volunteers should bring appropriate outdoor gear, insect repellent and gloves.

Advance registration is not required and work days are canceled if raining. Call 616-738-4811 for information.

The days include:

* Woody Species Removal Work Days improve wildlife habitat by removing invasive shrubs such as honeysuckle and autumn olive from our natural areas. Terrain may be difficult. These work days are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Crockery Creek Natural Area and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Grand River Open Space. The Crockery Creek Natural Area is located in Crockery Township. From the intersection of Leonard Road and Wren Drive, travel west on Wren Drive to the parking area at the end of the road. Grand River Open Space is located in Tallmadge Township on the east bank of the Grand River immediately south of M-45. The entrance is on Linden Drive.

* The National Public Lands Work Day will be from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 29. Celebrate National Public Lands Day by helping remove invasive shrubs at Olive Shores. After the work, enjoy a relaxing afternoon at this new scenic Lake Michigan park. Work day terrain will not be strenuous. Olive Shores is located in Port Sheldon Township on Olive Shores Road about 0.5 miles south of Lakeshore Avenue.

* Trail Building Work Days at Bur Oak Landing Open Space Land are scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and 9-11 a.m. Oct. 13. Bur Oak Landing is located in Polkton Township. From the intersection of Oriole Drive and Leonard Street, travel west on Oriole Drive to the parking lot.

* Garden Cleanup Work Day will help keep Ottawa County Parks gardens beautiful at Spring Grove Park. These sessions are scheduled for 5:30-7:30 Sept. 6 and 9-11 a.m. Sept. 22. Spring Grove Park is located in Jamestown Township on Greenly Street between 24th and 16th Avenues. Another Garden Cleanup Work Day is scheduled at the Weaver House at Pine Bend from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Pine Bend is located in Port Sheldon Township. From the intersection of Croswell Street and 156th Avenue, travel south on 156th Avenue to the park entrance.
