$250K for camp traffic fix

“We’re trying to build a new entrance road for our campers,” Park Supervisor Joyce Rhodes said. “We’ve got the (Michigan) Department of Management and Budget involved because it’s over a quarter of a million dollars.”

Rhodes said the project would add a separate entrance for campers entering the state park.

Rhodes said that she is awaiting word from the state for authorization to begin the project. She hopes it will begin this coming spring, but it might not happen until next fall.

“There’s parks in the state that are in worse shape, but there’s very few that have the volume we do or the exposure to the public,” she said.

Grand Haven Project Manager Julie Beaton said whenever the state begins its campground project, the city would likely work with them to make sure whatever is done ties into Harbor Drive. But should the state make changes to the newly constructed road, Beaton said it would come from the state's pocketbook.

“Anything they redo out in the road would be at the state’s expense,” Beaton said. “We’re hoping that a lot of what we’ve redone stays.”

State park officials are also setting their sights on more improvements down the road to the campground and parking lots.
