Coast Guard ice rescue demo held at Chinook PIer

A handful of area residents watched as a crew practiced rescuing a "fisherman" from the frigid waters of the Grand River South Channel shortly after 11 a.m.

Chief Eric Koch of Sector Field Office Grand Haven played the victim, who despite checking the ice with a pole, fell through while enroute to his fishing spot.

Koch demonstrated self-rescue using ice awls (picks). He also used a flare to call attention to his plight.

Coast Guard crew members then rescued him with a hook, a sled, and an inflatable ice rescue boat.

Sector Field Office Commander Sean Brady said anyone considering going out on the ice should remember the I.C.E. formula:

Intelligence: Check local conditions;

Clothing: Dress in layers;

Equipment: Wear a life jacket, and carry ice awls and flares.
