Lakefront purchase eyed

Hill, the community development director for Spring Lake Township, recognized the advertised acreage on Little Black Lake as being included in the township's long-term recreation plan. It is designated as a future spot for public access and preservation.

“It was just a stroke of luck,” Hill said of spotting the listing for the 30-acre waterfront parcel known as the Hines Property.

The asking price is $150,000.

The township is asking for a financial boost from the state to purchase the land, located west of where Wilson Street ends. Its northern property line borders Muskegon County.

The township is teaming up with neighboring Norton Shores to bolster its chances of receiving the grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.

The township is eyeing the mixture of upland and wetland with 675 feet of water frontage for passive recreation use, according to Hill.

If the state grant is approved in December, the township would kick in $50,000 toward the purchase, with the state picking up the rest.

The City of Norton Shores is also applying for a trust fund grant in hopes of purchasing 12 waterfront acres immediately to the north of the Hines Property. That land has a price tag of $199,000 because it is a peninsula and includes more water frontage.

Norton Shores already owns a 40-acre park along Little Black Lake.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Club of Muskegon Heights owns 30 acres immediately south of the land the township is eyeing.

If the city and township's goals come to fruition, almost the entire east side of the lake would be in public hands.
