Democrats push to restore Michigan tax credit

The Save our EITC coalition on Tuesday called to restore the tax credit for the working poor to 20 percent of a similar federal tax credit. It's now 6 percent under changes approved by Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican lawmakers in 2011.
Democratic Sen. Bert Johnson of Detroit said the tax credit is a successful way to keep Michigan children from poverty. He said the money families receive from the credit gets immediately spent in local economies to benefit the state.
Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger spokesman Ari Adler said Michigan's current credit at 6 percent is more than what is offered in 31 other states.
