Twp. meeting prayer draws ACLU's attention

The Nov. 27, 2012, meeting of the Oakland Township Board of Trustees opened with the prayer in the name of Jesus.

The ACLU of Michigan's Oakland County branch sent a letter that same week to Oakland Township Supervisor Terry Gonser about the prayer. Gonser said the prayer was said by a trustee because it was the board's first meeting after the November election.

The ACLU said the prayer singles out one religion over others and such meetings shouldn't be opened with "sectarian invocations."

Township officials plan to meet soon to decide how to respond to the letter.
