Legion makeover

Marie Havenga • Jul 21, 2015 at 12:18 PM

When the saws stop whirring, a $165,000 renovation will be unveiled on the main floor of the building at 700 S. Harbor Ave., which has been home to the American Legion since 1938.

The legion has suspended public dinners until construction is completed, which should be by the end of April. Meanwhile, the post's bar has been relocated upstairs and will remain open.

On tap for the building is to have beer on tap. Renovations will include an updated bar with draught beer, built-in coolers and more space.

The remodeling work includes removing walls between the dining room and bar, and expanding the bar into the dining area.

Club manager Andy VanderHoek said the bar seating will be expanded from 20 stools to nearly 30.

"We're adding a large center island with a draught system that we have not had in many, many, many years," he added.

The bar was constructed in 1970 and was due for expansion, according to VanderHoek.
