Disc golf flies

The Township Board has approved “in concept” plans for an 18-hole course on the south side of Wilson Street, about a quarter-mile west of 174th Avenue.
Township Supervisor John Nash said he will meet with members of the Lakeshore Disc Golf Club, members of the township's recreation committee and anyone else interested in the issue during the next two weeks to hammer out details of an agreement.
The pact will put the 50-member club in charge of constructing, maintaining and policing the course. The township will provide a 20-space gravel parking lot and the disc golf baskets and poles that were removed from the Rycenga Park course when it was shut down in August 2012.
The township purchased the 120-acre property on the south side of Wilson Street in the 1980s for future industrial development. The proposed disc golf course would occupy about half of that property, according to preliminary drawings.
Township Clerk Carolyn Boersma said she wants to maintain the option of future industrial use, for which the property is currently zoned. No rezoning is required for a disc golf course, according to the township attorney.
Other Township Board members said they were in favor of using the land for disc golf until there is interest in that site for industrial use.
Part of the written agreement between the township and the club will include language stipulating that the township can reclaim the land for industrial use at any time.
Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said there are many other industrial sites in the township that have not yet been developed.
“This land is underutilized,” Gallagher said of the Wilson Street site. “Even though it's clear several of our board members would like to hold it until an industrial user comes along, I think the rest of the board said, until that time comes, let's use it for disc golf. I think that's a great decision. ... We don't anticipate anything happening there for the next few years.”
