Big project prepares to take flight

The airport terminal will be expanded, its outside will be resided, new doors and windows will be installed, and new heat and ventilation equipment will be added.

“The best news I can say is that this is not going to be used just by the airport, but also by the general public,” said Tom Manderscheid, the city's transportation director.

The total cost of the project is $458,000. The bulk of the money comes from state and federal transportation grants. The city is paying just $23,000 toward the project.

“(The city’s portion) comes from the airport fund for money we generate from air hangar rentals,” Manderscheid said.

The main portion of the project is the addition of a 1,500-square-foot multipurpose room that will seat 50 people. The room will feature an accordion door to divide the room for multiple uses, and a door to separate the area from the rest of the building.

“We will be giving the general public access to the building without giving access to the terminal side,” Manderscheid said.

Manderscheid said this space could be used not only for airport groups and flight enthusiasts that regularly use the airport, but also as meeting space for community groups and businesses in the area, as well as for future flight instruction courses.

Construction is set to begin in mid-June and take 4-5 months to complete.
