Fountain funding needed

“It needs it,” Grand Haven Facilities Manager Dan Vivian said. “Anything left out in the weather takes a toll on it.”

City Council recently approved a $75,000 project to address upgrades to the Musical Fountain's pipes.

“This will get to all of the plumbing down below the water except for the ‘peacocks’ and the ‘birthday cakes,’” City Manager Pat McGinnis said, referring to fountain spray patterns.

The project is being made possible by a fundraising drive this summer aimed at raising $50,000 in 50 days. People can find donation coupons in the Tribune, or contribute to the cause at the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.

Work on the fountain is already under way. Once the upgrade project is done, a rededication ceremony will take place at dusk May 26.

Plumbing changes aren’t going to be the only thing that changes at the fountain this year.

“There’s going to be LED lighting, and we’ll eventually have the fountain just run LEDs,” Vivian said, noting that both LEDs and the old style of lighting will be used this season.
