The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Arbor Day Foundation say the communities were designated for work accomplished last year. They received award materials in advance of this year's Arbor Day, which is April 26.
The Tree City USA program promotes proper tree care and management in urban areas. It's meant to call attention to the economic, health and aesthetic benefits that trees provide.
Communities interested in participating must have a board or department responsible for tree care, a local tree ordinance and a budget for public tree care. A local Arbor Day celebration is also required.
