No emergency: Firefighters help clean bridge

Michigan Department of Transportation employee Kevin Braybrook said the firefighters make quick work of the project and they can clean the entire north and southbound bridge grating in less than four hours.
Braybrook said the big fire hoses are used to blow off salt and dirt to clean the grating and get the bridge ready for inspection.
He noted a piece of damaged grating was probably hit by a snowplow blade and would have to be replaced.
Firefighters from the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety and the Crockery Township Fire Department do this every year, Braybrook said.
“It saves a lot of money using these guys,” he said. They are paid for their time with federal funds.
Braybrook said it’s also a safer project because drivers pay a lot more attention to the flashing red lights on the fire trucks then they do to the amber lights on MDOT vehicles.
